Twitch To Add Warnings Before Ads And New Snooze Option

Twitch ads are a necessary but annoying thing. In theory, they help keep subscription prices down as they allow for streams to be monetised by large companies. In reality, they always seem to pop up just as the person you're watching is about to get a world record or clutch win. That may be a thing of the past as Twitch plans to introduce a feature that will warn you when ads are about to play and allow you to snooze them.

As reported by Dexerto, an update on Twitch's blog details the upcoming ad changes planned for 2023. One big change is coming to how streamers disable pre-roll ads. These normally appear before a stream, meaning you have to wait a while to get stuck in. A previous change meant they could be disabled if 90 seconds of ads were run every 30 minutes, but now as long as three minutes are run per hour, it's up to the streamer when they run.

There will also be improvements to pre-roll ads, as Twitch will be "applying our Picture-by-Picture experience to the majority of pre-rolls that viewers do see." This means no more waiting to see what a streamer's up to before you watch them, which should greatly improve discoverability.

On snoozing, Twitch wrote, "We’re also exploring ways to give communities a heads up when ads are coming and the ability to snooze video mid-roll ads." Being able to delay ads for a short time so you can catch the end of a streamer's anecdote or watch a key story moment they're playing through will give you more control over how you watch and engage with the service. Even just knowing when one is coming up so you can go and make yourself a cup of tea will be handy.

In other Twitch news, an Elden Ring streamer has figured out a very technical and complex way to control the Game with her mind. Hopefully it doesn't try to control her back.
