Netflix password sharing to end in Australia as streaming service cracks down on accounts

The days of freeloading on family and friends’ Netflix accounts are over, as the streaming giant officially rolls out its crackdown on password sharing in Australia.

From Wednesday, Netflix will begin contacting customers to let them know those looking to share their account will have to pay more.

It’s a blow to thousands of Australians who share accounts with family members in different homes or friends in an effort to keep costs low.

The email states a Netflix account should only be used in one household, meaning those who use the account while living in elsewhere will get the boot unless the paying user coughs up more cash.

Paying customers will have the option to buy an extra member outside their household with whom to share for an extra $7.99 a month.

They can also transfer the profile of whoever is outside the household to a new membership they can pay for without losing their viewing history.

The streaming giant previously said more than 100 million households password share to use the same account and it was introducing a fee for password sharing to combat that.

Netflix launched the password sharing crackdown in Canada and New Zealand in February.

Based on an earlier trial of the rules in Latin America, Netflix said it expects some members to cancel their accounts in each market when paid sharing is rolled out there.

However, the platform says it expects to see improved revenue as the freeloaders begin to activate their own standalone accounts.

For those concerned about watching Netflix on the go, the service said there would be no problems for people within the same household using their profiles when Travelling.

It is not yet known when the new rules will start.
